The Power of Hue
There’s something powerful about a colorist’s work—it lingers. Not just in the
mirror, but in the memory of the client, and the confidence they carry forward.
In this summer issue, we explore the incredible depth and range that color
services bring to our industry: technically, emotionally, and economically.
It also happens to be my first issue as Editor-in-Chief—an exciting beginning
rooted in the same values we see in the artistry featured here: precision, intention,
and transformation. Stepping into this role has reminded me how deeply color
Lexie Comstock
Editor-in-Chief
shapes our industry and the way professionals connect with clients, trends, and
each other.
We highlight color as a foundation, a transformation, and a long-term
relationship. Our featured artists—from editorial leaders to behind-the-chair
educators—are showing us what it means to blend practicality with artistry.
Low-maintenance techniques meet high-impact results. Everyday services evolve
into rituals of self-expression.
And as we experience the summer season, this issue reminds us that color care is
more than a finishing touch—it’s the full experience.

A POP PRINCESS NAMED ARIANA DARED

ONCE UPON A TIME, a celebrated

metamorphosis confirming her a new
Hollywood hair icon. This journey

powerful testament to her versatile
spirit, proving her enchanting presence
could command the silver screen.
Through captivating performances and
dazzling new looks, Princess Ariana

■ SPECTRUM BLONDE. “Blonde isn’t one
look anymore, it’s a spectrum. That’s what
we wanted to capture in this collection.
From cool, icy tones to softer shades, each
image reflects the luxe, high-end finish that
makes blonde feel aspirational but still
totally wearable. Every look was designed to
feel polished, fresh and individual. Globally
Blonde is about making a statement that
blonde is bold, diverse and for everyone, no
matter who you are or where you’re from.”
Tim Scott-Wright (UK)
▲ TASTY CRÈME BRÛLÉE. “Crème Brûlée
Blonde is the color of the season, oozing
decadence with a mix of deep honey, fawn,
and vanilla hues. As we begin to take a step
away from clean, icy platinum blondes and
embrace warmer, richer shades - crème
brûlée blonde is the perfect balance
between bright and lived-in blonde.
When paired with loose waves, the full
potential of this shade is ignited, adding
dimension and definition to help crème
brûlée blonde glisten in the sunlight.” Dan
Spiller (UK)
◆ LAYERED SILHOUETTES. “For this model,
a natural deep brunette with a cool skin
tone and a warm complexion. I used
Keune Cream Blonde to lift the hair to a
level 10. To tone I used the best of both
worlds: KEUNE Semi Color level 10 gold
ash. It created the perfect balance with her
skin. It is sexy, confident, expensive and
luxurious.” Rusty Phillips (USA)
● POLISHED, YET SUBTLE. “This look is the
ultimate Lived In Blonde. I used an Under
Lighting technique, which involves ultra
finely weaving a section of hair before
clipping the top layer away. A lowlight is
applied to the bottom section, and then a
lightener to the section that you have
clipped away. The two layers together
create a subtle brightening effect. To tone a
lived in blonde I always opt for a subtle,
sheer tone with a cashmere finish. ”

■ OLD-MONEY TONES. “Old-Money blonde
continues to be the stand-out shade when
it comes to luxuriously creamy blondes.
This shade is perfect for clients who are
looking for a warmer, more golden-toned
blonde, that will brighten their complexion
and provide the hair with an ultra-luxurious
and elegant finish. With this color it’s all
about strategic placement and ensuring
fine highlights and baby-lights are placed
evenly throughout the hair, blending
seamlessly.” Kirsty Judge (UK)

▲ ICE BLONDE. “I love this look as it’s
very angelic and ethereal while being
strong at the same time. The trending
ice blonde tone was achieved by using
Wella color and her styling was done by
using her natural volume and
manipulating the texture with my hands
and a diffuser.” Sonya Dove (USA)
◆ RICH COOL HONEY BLONDE. “A beautiful,
well-executed blonde will always speak for
itself ! Blonde is often known for its
brightest of shades and its palest of hues.
The beauty of blonde is that it comes in
various hues, levels and combinations. I
absolutely love this rich cool honey blonde
look because it showcases the darkmedium
range from where blondes begin.
Dark/medium blondes are often a great
way to introduce and encourage a client
to going lighter. When creating blondes
it is important to understand the levels
of depth and brightness in order to achieve
the perfect healthy look.” Pati Rodriguez
(USA)
● VIBRANCY & DIMENSION. “This
dazzling titanium iced silver was prelightened
and then glazed with Goldwell
Elumen to give plenty of condition and
shine. Hair has been razored throughout
the perimeter and then styled with
a light, tousled texture to spotlight the
shattered ends. Encouraging hair to
shine is so important, so we always
choose finishing products that will give
the color vibrancy an extra dimension.”

● BLONDE AS A FOUNDATION. “Blonde is
arguably the most important color in my
creative toolkit. Achieving a clean,
luxurious blonde is essential, as it
influences every tone and hue I layer on
top. I believe the difference between
ordinary and extraordinary lies in
perfecting every step of the process, from
application to final tone. I’ve never been
one to follow trends for the sake of it. I’ve
built my brand around bold looks that
stand out, and I’m definitely seeing it pay
off !” Breanne Gershon (USA)
■ NATURAL INSPIRATION. “The flora that
inspired this blonde looks is Soymida
Febrifuga, commonly known as the Indian
redwood. This remarkable wildflower,
native to India’s deciduous forests, has a
captivating presence with its natural hues
and intricate structures. Leveraging these
natural elements, modern hair coloring
techniques such as airtouch, balayage, and
color melting can achieve breathtaking
results that not only mimic but also
celebrate the beauty of nature.” Fabian
Kedra (USA)

▲ LUMINOUS BLONDE. “I first met Olivia
Abonn on a photoshoot set where she was
modeling. I recommended an Airtouch
balayage using premium CREE products
and the results were stunning. A beautifully
blended, luminous blonde that looks
effortless, yet elevated. The tones were
soft, dimensional, and perfectly suited to
her skin tone.” Mustafa Avci (USA)

◆ BUTTERCREAM BOUNCE. “This beautiful
buttercream blonde was created bespoke
for Bianca Gascoigne to elevate and
accentuate her best features. It matches
her skin tone perfectly while making her
eyes pop too. This is a hair color that
blends warm and cool tones for a creamy,
multi-dimensional look. It’s a soft, natural
blonde with a mix of champagne &
beige tones softly giving a dimensional
effect without high contrast.”

prospecial color
Summer brings more than
sunshine and sandy toes.
For color-treated hair, it
means exposure to UV rays,
chlorine, saltwater, and
humidity—a perfect storm
of stressors that fade tone
and parch the cuticle.
As clients head outdoors,
salons are adapting with
services that protect,
refresh, and extend the
life of every hue.
SEASON-PR
E74
OOF COLOR75E
prospecial color
In 2025, color care is no longer just a
finishing step. It’s a mindset—woven into
consultations, service menus, and home care
routines. Here, we tap leading brand
educators and stylists for their seasonal
strategies to help clients hold on to color,
shine, and softness, no matter the forecast.
“Summer is packed with exciting activities, often involving fun
in the sun and water,” says Kassidy Case, color professional at
Moroccanoil. “Understanding their effects is key to keeping your
hair healthy and vibrant all season long.”
THE MID-SUMMER REFRESH
Many stylists now offer quick-hit refresh services tailored for summer.
Melody Larissa, Creative Artist and Educator for PRAVANA,
recommends a “Refresh” appointment that begins with a deep
cleanse to remove buildup, followed by a customized demi-permanent
gloss and moisturizing conditioner.
“We clarify with a cleansing shampoo, tone with HydraGloss, and
finish with a moisture-sealing conditioner,” she explains. “It’s a
perfect, in-and-out treatment that restores vibrancy without a full
service.”
Mego Ayvazian of Farouk Systems also relies on express
appointments: “Our Summer Color Refresh includes a gloss and deep
conditioning treatment. It helps revive faded color, adds shine, and
restores strength lost to UV and heat.”
HYDRATION AS A SERVICE
Across the board, stylists agree: summer color care starts with hydration.
“Hydration is everything,” says Lisa Giles, Paul Mitchell Pro Partner.
Based in Newport Beach, California, Giles offers a custom “blonding
maintenance” package for beach-loving clients. “Every appointment
includes a clear gloss and hydrating mask. I want my clients’ hair to
look and feel incredible all summer long.”
At Schwarzkopf Professional, Digital Artist Brendnetta Ashley
adjusts her in-salon care to meet seasonal demands. “I focus more on
preventative protection and hydration, especially for curly and coily
textures. Porous hair is more vulnerable to color fade, so I use tailored
in-salon boosters and glosses to lock in color.”
Goldwell International Artist Lindie Blackwell echoes the need for
adapting in-salon strategies as the weather warms. “During the
summer season, we often suggest lower-maintenance color
techniques, more tone-on-tone color, or glossing services,” she says.
“These techniques work with the effects of the sun rather than trying

E76
to fight against them.” She adds that express refresh services,
like glossing and conditioning, not only hydrate but also help seal
and protect the cuticle, making it easier to maintain color
between appointments.
SHINE THAT LASTS
Summer glosses aren’t just for tone. They’re strategic,
lightweight refreshers that restore shine, smooth texture, and
even help seal the cuticle.
“Glossing in summer is essential,” says Lisa Lobosco, Creative
Director at ECRU New York. “I offer clear or tinted glosses that
add tone, softness, and shine. They also transform texture,
which helps hair stay sleek in humidity.”
Oribe’s Global Artist Adam Livermore adds that lightweight
conditioning glosses can create a barrier against water
absorption, reducing the amount of color lost at every wash.
“I use color protection treatments that take five minutes at the
bowl and protect hair from its two biggest threats: sun and
water,” he says.
AT-HOME ADVICE THAT STICKS
Stylists aren’t just refreshing in the salon–they’re arming clients
with summer-proof habits and easy-to-use care systems.
“The best thing you can do is invest in a great color care
system,” says Larissa. “When my clients commit to at-home
care, their color looks better longer and they need fewer
in-salon corrections.”
Ashley agrees, noting that proper at-home maintenance bridges
the gap between appointments. “I recommend lightweight,
color-safe shampoos and conditioners, and always a UV
protectant for those longer days in the sun.”
THE TAKEAWAY
As the industry continues to emphasize longevity and
wearability, summer color care is no longer a nice-to-have–
it’s an essential offering. Through education, strategic
refresh services, and personalized home care, salons are
helping clients not just survive summer, but thrive in it.

SEVEN-STEP GUIDE

a lightener or a color. Perfect
in combination with Keune’s

around the section to ensure even
processing and optimal results.
5 • Repeat: Continue this
meticulous process throughout
the head for a consistent and
beautifully seamless effect.
6 • Process and rinse: Allow the
color/lightener to process fully,
then rinse the hair thoroughly.

BLONDE
The blonde that
means business.
Low-maintenance,
high impact, and
salon-smart.
Blonde isn’t going anywhere—but in
2025, clients want it to last longer, grow
out softer, and cost less per visit. Enter Recession
Blonde: the low-maintenance,
root-friendly shift gaining traction across
social platforms and salon floors alike. The
hashtag #RecessionBlonde is trending
on social media, with clients and creators
showcasing soft, dimensional
blondes that blend effortlessly into natural
roots. Think toned-down brightness,
bronde blends, shadow roots, and foil
placements designed for longevity. Paired
with complementary trends like #LivedIn-
Color, the message is clear: today’s
blonde is strategic. Economic shifts are
driving this evolution. With inflation still
top of mind, clients are prioritizing color
that stays fresh without frequent upkeep.
At the same time, salons are responding—offering
maintenance menus, refresh
cycles, and consults that focus on
wearability and long-term value.
“I’ve always been focused on the best outcomes
and value for my clients,” says Patricia
Nikole (@paintedhair). “With my
lived-in PaintedHair techniques, clients
are able to stretch the time between appointments.
Think root melts, shadowing,
and tonal shifts that fade beautifully. It’s
all about understanding their budget and
lifestyle from the very beginning.” The approach
isn’t just practical—it’s profitable.

streamlining appointments, and building
trust through realistic maintenance plans.
As a result, clients feel seen and supported—and
more likely to rebook. Recession
Blonde reflects a return to thoughtful
beauty, much like past economic downturns
when trends skewed more natural.
Today’s blonde is still bright—but it’s also
purposeful. “There’s definitely been a
shift,” notes Patricia. “Clients are more
intentional now. They want color that
feels personal, sustainable, and healthy.
It’s really about meeting people where
they’re at—while still delivering high-impact
results.” The most successful salons
aren’t pushing back against this trend—
they’re embracing it, rethinking service
structures and tone strategies to fit the
moment.“Clients are craving color that
works with their lifestyle, not against it,”
says Wella Global Top Artist Sonya Dove.
“So I’m focusing on low-maintenance
blending techniques like shadow roots
and soft melts that grow out seamlessly.”
It’s not just about saving money—it’s
about building trust through strategic,
beautiful color that aligns with their
needs. Dove also recommends regular
shine treatments and protective care to
keep hair in top condition between services.
This kind of attentive, lifestyle-driven
approach is setting the tone for 2025,
where subtlety, longevity, and low-maintenance
results take center stage.

LUIS ALVAREZ RECEIVES THE 2025 FRED A. PIATTONI

A highlight of this year’s celebration was the
presentation of the Fred A. Piattoni Award
for Industry Service to Luis Alvarez, Biolage

individuals who exemplify outstanding

Alvarez, an award-winning master artist,
product developer, educator, and photographer,
was deeply moved by the honor:
my team, but as a reflection of something I
believe is essential to the long-term success
of our industry: reciprocity.”
Looking back on a decade-long creative
partnership with America’s Beauty Show—
one that garnered 19 design awards and
featured iconic collaborations like
photographing Joffrey Ballet dancers and
working alongside legendary sculptor Richard

event with a phrase he often returns to: “artist

“That’s why I often call America’s Beauty
