At the British Tourism & Travel Show this
year, that moment came quickly. The
aisles were busy, properly busy. Not the
polite kind of footfall, but the sort
where people are stopping, leaning in,
asking questions that lead somewhere.
You could feel it — that sense that
people hadn’t just come to look, they’d
come to get things done.
It’s a mood that seems to be carrying
across the wider trade. Conversations
around Association of Group Travel
Organisers events and UKInbound
gatherings tell a similar story. Good
attendance, genuine engagement, and
— perhaps most importantly — real
business being quietly agreed in
corners and over coffee.
But there’s something else there too.
Not worry exactly. Just a slight
tightening of the lens.
People are thinking a bit harder about
costs. Looking a little more closely at
what works and what doesn’t. And then
there’s the slow, steady arrival of new
European travel requirements —
fingerprint scans at borders, and the
upcoming ETIAS, due to come in from
late 2026, which will require travellers
to apply before they even set off. None
of it dramatic on its own,
but enough to make
organisers pause,
double-check, and
build in a little more time,
There’s a sense of the industry settling
into itself again. Less distraction, more
clarity. A focus on places that know
how to welcome a group properly, and
experiences that deliver without fuss.
The kind of reliability that doesn’t shout,
but quietly earns its place in a
programme year after year.
You’ll see that reflected throughout this
issue.
From the steady insights in AGTO to the
familiar rhythm of Johnsons Journal,
from the colour and
character of Marvelous
Markets to the pull of
Captivating Castle and
the ease of Spring
Escapes, there’s a
thread running through
it all. Destinations like
Loughborough, the wide appeal of
Space & Exploration, the regional
strength of the North East, Sussex and
Kent — each offering something
organisers can use, not just admire.
Because that’s where we are now.
Still busy. Still optimistic. Just a little
more considered.
And perhaps, in the long run, that
makes for better decisions all round.
Happy travelling.

New Roles for Familiar Faces as Daish’s Holidays
In many travel businesses,
the real strength sits
quietly behind the scenes
the people who know the
customers, understand the
rhythm of the operation,
and keep everything
running smoothly. At Daish’s
Holidays, two such team
members have recently
stepped into new roles at
the company’s
Bournemouth head office.
Maria Green (left), who
has spent the past decade
with the business, has been
promoted from
Reservations Manager to
Head of Sales and
Marketing. Having worked
closely with customers for
many years, she brings a
clear understanding of
what guests value most
from a holiday.
Maria says she is excited
to begin the next chapter
and help the company
continue to grow,
welcoming new guests
while strengthening Daish’s
loyal customer base.
Alongside this, Carla
Manners has been
promoted from Assistant
Reservations Manager to
Reservations Manager
after joining the team in
2019.
Commercial Director Paul
Harper said the promotions
reflect the company’s
belief in developing talent
from within.

London Transport Museum Hits Record High
There’s something quietly
reassuring about a place
that keeps the city
moving, even when you’re
standing still. In 2025,
London Transport Museum
welcomed a record
449,599 visitors — its
highest since opening in
Covent Garden in 1980 —
helped along by new
exhibitions, a refreshed
identity, and a sharper
focus on group visits.
What draws people in isn’t
just nostalgia. It’s the sense
of stepping behind the
curtain. Hidden London
tours, now more popular
than ever, offer access to
forgotten platforms and
secret tunnels, the kind of
spaces that feel like
stories waiting to be told.
Add in live Friday music
and thoughtful displays,
and it becomes less a
museum, more a living,
breathing piece of the city.

feels as though it’s only just
beginning to gather itself.
The lake lies perfectly still,
reflecting the surrounding
fells with a clarity that
almost feels deliberate, as
if nature has paused to
compose something worth
looking at properly.
A line of trees traces the
water’s edge, each one
distinct, yet together
forming a gentle rhythm
across the scene. Beyond
them, the hills lift in soft
layers of green and
burnished amber, catching
the first light in a way that
feels both fleeting and
quietly assured.
It doesn’t demand
attention. It earns it —
slowly, and then all at
once.

AGTO MATTERS
How trade shows
attract GTOs
The three major annual
group travel trade
shows provide the
platform for group
travel organisers and
industry suppliers to get
together, offering ideas
and inspiration for
future trips and
holidays. Wendy
Hartley-Scarff, chief
executive of the
Association for Group
Travel Organisers
(AGTO) takes a look at
the changes that are
taking place to ensure
these important events
remain key dates in a
group travel organiser’s
diary?
This year the British
Tourism & Travel Show
(BTTS) changed from
being a two-day show
to being a single day.
The move came in
response to exhibitors’
ever tightening show
budgets and the
increasing costs of
organising such events.
BTTS is often regarded
as the doyen of group
travel shows. The name
has changed of course;
think back to the British
Travel Trade Fair at the
NEC in the 1990s, then
Best of Britain and
Ireland (BoBI) at
Olympia in central
London before settling
back at the NEC.
This year, a look through
the show catalogue
revealed some 220
different exhibitors. A
new initiative, ‘Tourism
Tycoon’, added
something new, in the
form of a ‘passport’
that offered prizes for
visitors who engaged
with exhibitors and
other activities.
Another event trying
something new is
Excursions, billed as the
‘UK’s longest running
group travel show’, and
now in its 52nd year. This
year, the format
changed with the
introduction of
‘Excursions on the Road’
and the start of the
event moving to a
different venue each
year.
This year brought
around 50 exhibitors
and a more relaxed
table-top format,
moving away from the
rigidity of a traditional
shell-scheme design. It
worked, with visitors
and exhibitors saying
the new format worked
well.
The other main group
travel exhibition, the
Group Leisure & Travel
Show, which has found a
home at Arena MK in
Milton Keynes, this year
taking place on 8
October, also offers
around 200 exhibitors.
The show stands alone
in having a line-up of
celebrity speakers,
giving visitors a break
from walking the aisles.
AGTO attends all these
shows, highlighting the
benefits of membership
and taking the
opportunity to engage
with visitors and
industry suppliers. But
we’re also innovating
ourselves. At the end of
February we held our
second ‘AGTO
Showcase’. This
weekend event, which
used to be an annual
date in the group travel
calendar prior to the
pandemic, returned in
2025 and was held at
the Marsham Court
Hotel in Bournemouth.
This year, the venue was
the Holiday Inn
Leicester, with around
100 GTOs and suppliers
getting together for a
programme of
familiarisation trips and
entertainment. This mix
of business and
socialising includes the
Showcase Exhibition, a
table-top format that
gives exhibitors and
GTOs the opportunity
to chat away from the
time constraints of the
traditional group travel
shows. The event proved
successful and plans
are in place for ‘AGTO
Showcase 2027’.
Our members told us
they welcome this
alternative to the
regular group travel
trade shows, offering
another way to
discover the new ideas
and inspiration they
need for their trips and
holidays.

Our next holiday is not until
late April when we go by

very timely article in this
magazine that has given me

for our free day. We already

that later in the year.
Ken, as regular readers know,
loves trains (and my
grandfather was a

year we have a holiday just
for the two of us visiting one
of the many Heritage

at Portmeirion (my choice).

Spring Escapes
Spring Starts Here brings groups back into colour and light, featuring uplifting gardens and
easy holiday breaks, fresh air, fresh ideas, and effortless planning for organisers.
Mapperton House,
Gardens and Wildlands
Tucked into the rolling hills
of Dorset, Mapperton
House and Gardens offers
the perfect destination for
a spring escape. As the
season begins to warm the
countryside, the gardens
come alive with fresh
growth, soft colour and the
promise of longer days
outdoors. For visitors
seeking a restorative earlyseason
break, few places
capture the charm of rural
England quite like this
historic estate.
Mapperton is perhaps best
known for its remarkable
award-winning Italianate
terraced gardens, which
cascade down the hillside
below the house. These
carefully designed
terraces create a
dramatic sense of
movement through the
landscape, guiding visitors
past clipped hedges and
topiary, ornamental
planting and sweeping
lawns. In spring the
gardens begin to glow
with seasonal colour –
drifts of tulips and
daffodils, fresh green
foliage and soft pink hues
of the magnolia blossoms
that frame the gardens
and distant hills beyond.
The balance of formal
structure and natural
planting makes the
gardens feel both elegant
and welcoming.
At the heart of the estate
stands Mapperton House, a
beautiful Jacobean manor
whose honey-coloured
stone and historic
character set the tone for
the entire property. Parts of
the house date back to
the 16th century, with later
Jacobean additions
creating the elegant
façade seen today. Over
the centuries it has
remained a family home,
carefully preserved while
opening its doors to visitors
who want to experience
its rich heritage and period
interiors.
A stay on the estate allows
guests to fully immerse
themselves in this
peaceful setting. Several
charming cottages
located across the
grounds provide
comfortable
accommodation for those
wanting a longer garden
getaway. Waking up to
birdsong and morning light
across the fields, visitors
can enjoy early walks
through the estate before
spending the day exploring
the gardens or nearby
countryside.
Spring also brings a lively
programme of events that
make Mapperton an
appealing destination for
groups and garden
enthusiasts. In April, the
Mapperton Spring Plant
Fair gathers specialist
nurseries and growers in
the grounds, offering a
wonderful opportunity to
discover unusual plants,
pick up gardening
inspiration and enjoy a
sociable day among
fellow plant lovers.
The celebrations continue
in May with the Best of
West Dorset Market, where
local producers, makers
and artisans showcase the
very best of the region.
Visitors can browse stalls
filled with seasonal food,
crafts and handmade
goods, turning a garden
visit into a wider
celebration of Dorset’s
rural culture.
Whether drawn by the
beauty of spring planting,
the tranquillity of the
countryside or the appeal
of a short seasonal retreat,
Mapperton offers an
inviting blend of garden
inspiration, history and
hospitality – a perfect
early-season escape.

Daish’s For Groups
If you travel with a group
long enough, you learn
that the journey itself can
become half the story.
Laughter at the back of
the coach, a flask being
passed along the aisle,
someone pointing out a
landmark that sparks a
memory. It’s the sort of
travel that feels pleasantly
unhurried, and that spirit is
very much at the heart of
Daish’s Holidays.
Based in Bournemouth and
still proudly family owned,
Daish’s has quietly built a
reputation for making
traditional seaside breaks
feel reassuringly easy. Their
approach is simple:
comfortable hotels in
places people genuinely
want to visit, coaches that
take the strain out of
travel, and a programme
of excursions that turns a
holiday into a collection of
shared experiences.
Across England and Wales,
the company operates
eleven hotels in nine wellloved
destinations. Each
has its own personality but
shares the same idea of
hospitality: relaxed,
welcoming, and geared
towards guests who enjoy
seeing somewhere
properly rather than simply
ticking it off a list.
Take Newquay, for
instance, where the
Barrowfield Hotel sits close
to Cornwall’s sweeping
Atlantic beaches. Groups
arrive to sea air, sandy
promenades and the
gentle rhythm of a coastal
town that still feels proudly
traditional. Or head north
to Scarborough and the
Esplanade Hotel, where
the view stretches across
one of Britain’s most classic
seaside bays.
Further south, Torquay
offers two Daish’s
properties — the
Devonshire Hotel and the
Abbey Lawn Hotel —
placing groups within easy
reach of palm-lined
promenades and Devon’s
famously mild climate.
Meanwhile, Weymouth’s
Prince Regent and Russell
hotels provide a gateway
to Dorset’s Jurassic Coast,
where the sea meets some
of the most dramatic
landscapes in England.
For groups drawn to the
bustle of larger resorts,
Bournemouth Sands Hotel
sits close to the town’s
long sandy beaches, while
the Imperial Hotel in
Eastbourne offers a base
for exploring the elegant
charm of the Sussex coast.
Over in Wales, the
Somerset Hotel in
Llandudno looks out across
a Victorian seafront that
feels almost unchanged by
time.
One of the appealing
aspects of Daish’s holidays
is the flexibility. Guests can
join one of the company’s
comfortable coaches from
pick-up points across the
UK — stretching from West
Yorkshire to Cornwall — or
make their own way by car.
Either way, the welcome at
the hotel tends to feel the
same: friendly, efficient,
and reassuringly organised.
Once settled in, groups
often discover that the
real joy lies in the
excursions. Each hotel
offers day trips and local
outings that can be
booked at reception,
opening up nearby
attractions, coastal
scenery, and historic towns
without the stress of
planning every detail.
It’s a style of travel that
feels refreshingly
straightforward.
Comfortable journeys,
familiar seaside resorts,
and the pleasure of
exploring somewhere new
in good company — the
kind of holiday that
reminds you why group
travel remains one of the
most enjoyable ways to
see Britain.

Perfect for Groups
A curated collection of standout attractions, experiences and venues designed with groups in mind,
making planning easier and ensuring memorable, well-organised visits for every itinerary.
Coaches are welcomed, the
arrival feels organised rather
than chaotic, and there’s plenty
of breathing space to keep
everyone happy.
Inside, guided tours bring the
castle’s story to life through
lavish State Rooms, fine art, and
those delicious historical details
that make people lean in and
whisper, “Imagine living here.”
Outside, the gardens and estate
walks offer a gentler pace, ideal
for chatty strolls and photos
that everyone will pretend were
spontaneous.
Waddesdon Manor is the sort of
place that makes you pause middrive
and think, “Right this is why we
come out.” Built by Baron Ferdinand
de Rothschild in the 19th century, it’s
a dazzling French Renaissance-style
château set above immaculately
landscaped gardens, with sweeping
views across the Buckinghamshire
countryside.
For groups, it’s a superb all-round day
out: grand interiors filled with worldclass
art and treasure, beautifully
curated seasonal displays, and
gardens that reward a slow wander
(with plenty of “ooh” moments for
the camera roll). There’s also
excellent dining on site, plus
shopping for gifts that don’t feel like
the usual afterthought.
Better still, it’s exceptionally well
organised a key detail when you’re
arriving by coach and working to a
timetable.
Belvoir Castle
Belvoir Castle rises above the
Vale of Belvoir like something
dreamt up by an overconfident
Romantic poet: turrets, towers,
and a view that makes you stand
a little straighter without
knowing why. For groups, it’s a
superb day out because it
balances grandeur with ease.
Round it off with tea and cake
in the café, and you’ve got a
group day that feels properly
special without feeling like hard
work.
